"The Wharfe is a big, fast-flowing river and it's unpredictable. In 1992, the town of Grassington was used as a filming location for Wuthering Heights. The Wharfe is 65 miles (104.6 km) long before it joins the Ouse making it the 21st longest river in Britain. In 1998 a young couple, Barry and Lynn Collett, on the second day of their honeymoon went for a romantic walk down by the Strid… never to be seen alive again. Please note the Strid is very dangerous and lives have been lost.  However, this likely influenced a preceding Brittonic name, derived from the obscure element *werβ (related to Middle Welsh gweryn, 'liquid').. Later forms of the name were probably influenced by the Old Norse hwerfi, meaning "bend".

In 2010, eight-year-old Aaron Page, from Pontefract, drowned after he slipped from a rock. At its narrowest point the Strid is only about two metres wide, and foolhardy visitors have been known to try to jump across the roaring chasm.
There is a footbridge straddling the falls for viewing. The Millstone Grit outcrops at the Cow and Calf Rocks near Ilkley form a rolling dissected plateau.
The water is also extremely cold, and its temperature rarely rises any higher during summer than it does in the winter. The Wharfe is so hazardous that Grassington-based public safety officer Lucy Osborn - a trained firefighter who works as a liaison point between all three emergency services - recommends that visitors avoid swimming in it altogether. Species of tree and shrub include ash, downy birch, hazel, hawthorn, yew and rowan.
Police divers found their bodies 25ft below the surface.
Linton Falls (Grid Reference: SE001633) are located close to the village of Linton, just south of Grassington. It has been creating a bit of ill feeling locally; we need people to visit, but we also need them to behave in the right way.".
The ledges also support woodrush, polypody and water avens, purple saxifrage, yellow saxifrage, hoary whitlowgrass and roseroot.
The name is probably of Brythonic origin, from a root meaning "winding". He was 63 at the time and many people were baffled as to why he had ended up in the water, as they believed he was too old to have attempted to jump across it.
More rare is dark red helleborine.

, The river has had appearances in films. The heaps of mining waste remain, contaminated with lead, and on which little will grow. Reportedly, the Strid in Yorkshire has claimed the lives of hundreds including a child in 2010. A witness further downstream, Mr Desmond Thomas, raised the alarm when he saw a jacket and what looked like a man’s body flow past him.
Near Grassington, the river turns south-east over Linton Falls.
Lower down the valley, species including alpine cinquefoil, lily-of-the-valley, mountain melick and herb paris, blue sesleria, common valerian and wild angelica. By the early 19th century there was a demand for food from the growing industrial towns and farmers and many farms began to produce milk from the lower lands and use the higher fells for sheep. The local British tribe of Brigantes were subdued by the Romans in AD 74. A passer-by grabbed hold of him but he was dragged beneath the surface. , In medieval times low intensity methods were used to produce both crops and livestock but the great monasteries of Fountains, Rievaulx and Bolton Priory had large sheep flocks and sold their wool on the European market. Police officers and the fire service will visit popular areas of the Wharfe this weekend to engage with swimmers, and they are also working with the National Park Authority to educate more people about the dangers of the river. However, they urge you to be careful around the Strid. If you're taking children, don't allow them to swim - stick to paddling.
In Upper Wharfedale the scars and screes support a range of plants including the alpine cinquefoil and hoary whitlowgrass.
After the Norman invasion, the lands were given to Robert Romilly. Yet the death of an 18-year-old man from Bradford who drowned at Linton Falls last Friday - the hottest day of the year - is a stark reminder that the benign-looking Wharfe has claimed many lives. Also to be found are alternate-leaved golden saxifrage, reed canary-grass and stone bramble.
The Bolton Abbey village website advertises the sights and attractions, including what is supposedly a very lovely walk through the Strid Wood. He and a friend had been jumping from the cliff into the water. Can grandparents babysit?
Rarer species to be found in the grikes include baneberry and downy currant. For much of its length it is the county boundary between West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. More than 230 species of bird have been observed along the river valley including eagle-owl, red grouse, stonechat, whinchat, golden plover, pied flycatcher, redstart, wood warbler, common sandpiper, grey wagtail, dipper, tawny owl, sparrowhawk, greater spotted woodpecker, nuthatch, treecreeper and, in wetter places, snipe and woodcock, chiffchaff, willow warbler, garden warbler, and twite.
, There are populations of rabbit, red fox, grey squirrel, otter, water voles and deer. Specifically, this section of the river is known as the Bolton Strid, or else just the Strid. If you see someone struggling in the water, PSO Osborn recommends shouting at them to remain calm, and using rope or a branch to try and reach them - there are no throwlines or lifebelts along the river. It flows east and south-east taking the flows from many small streams, whose sources are the sink holes from Yockenthwaite Moor on the north bank and Horse Head Moor on the south bank. The monasteries helped develop vast sheep farms and the founding of drove roads, which can still be seen and walked today.
