Manuals dont say anything about performance from shorter barrels, to me it would make sense that the faster burning powders would do best in barrels under three inches. I won't do a poll, as it would take 20 choices and I would still leave out somebody's favorite. Bullseye; if you want accuracy & precision. I could load .38 spl completely with BE and no other powder. I use it in 9mm, 45 acp, 10mm and I may even give it a shot in. & finances were slim.
This load shoots very well in a variety of 38 and 357 Magnum pistols in which it has been tried over the years. I've wondered if a stouter load would have worked better. I am also finding Winchester WST to make a good powder for .38, .45 and 12 gauge, but the loading data is kinda scarce. I use Win231 for 38s. I'll have to start wayy low and come up with this one, should have bought 50 extra to play with. Unique didn't burn as clean as P5055. Very clean burning too.
Titegroup would be my second choice, and after that SOLO 1000 or Nitro 100. In a Circuit Judge rifle, I use 296 with a 300-grain hollow base bullet to good effect. Modern smokeless propellants are much more energetic, so a typical charge of 6.0 or 7.0 grains barely fills a quarter or so of the case volume.
